Steps to Zero Waste

The 5 R’s of Zero Waste is a relatively new concept that is gaining popularity. It is adding to the idea of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” that was originally used to encourage recycling.  While it is true that recycling has its place within the waste system, there are several better options to try first. See steps 1 – 3 to try first:

  1. Refuse

Refuse is the easiest way to reduce waste, simply refuse to accept an item. Tip – by carrying reusable bags, cups, and straws with you, the ability to refuse is always with you.

  1. Reduce

Reduce the amount you use, to live using only as much as you need. If we consume less in the beginning, there will be less to dispose of at the end. Note – Fast Fashion is a place where reduction is fairly easy to implement. Do you need ten pairs of jeans or can you live with five or less?

  1. Reuse

Reuse an item for a different purpose. Easy tip – Turn old, worn out or stained clothing into rags.

  1. Recycle

Recycle an item to be repurposed into a new item from its base materials, ex. plastic bottles turned into park benches. If you cannot refuse, reduce, or reuse, see if it can be recycled. The process of recycling is energy and resource intensive and many items are not recyclable if not properly sorted or cleaned. Follow the links for information on recycling in the Columbus area.

  1. Rot

Rot is to let an organic item decompose. Composting is a controlled process of rotting that turns yard waste and food scraps into nutrient rich additions for soil. This is better for the environment than sending to the landfill. Did you know – Commercial composting is available in our area.

If none of the above steps are applicable, then it goes to the landfill.

So, start at the beginning and follow the 5 R’s to reduce the amount of waste that is sent to the landfills and work towards a more sustainable way of consuming.
